February 9, 2021

The Covid 19 Pandemic has decimated the lives of many with the extreme disruption of the tourism industry and all the other industries that are a part of the supply chain. This has in turn created the domino effect with massive layoffs and cuts in salaries. Furthermore, the closure of most schools has also disrupted the lives of families and the supply chain related there to as well.

However, it is not all doom and gloom as many innovative and creative individuals have risen to the challenge and grasped the opportunities that the pandemic offered and today, they have found satisfaction from the successful outcome of their entrepreneurial efforts.

2020 was the greatest challenge for every individual globally and while many rose to the challenges, many got lost and mentally and emotionally shutdown as their comfort zone got dragged from under them.

2021 however, is now in its second month and, we are a month away from the anniversary of the beginning of this crisis. Technology got its biggest boost with now names like Zoom and other virtual meeting platforms are a part of every individual’s communication toolkit. Working from home is slowly becoming a standard as more businesses transition to this idea, however this hasn’t been without its detractors who still wholeheartedly believe in the physical supervision primarily due to their insufficient knowledge of the technology available and its application in remote working environments.

2021 is the year to pivot if you have not done so yet. Life will never be the same, the lessons of 2020 should be forever ingrained in our memory to ensure that we build the resilience in our system for future crises. Persist with the old is not an option, and the new normal is an oxymoron, because if its new its not normal, and if it is normal its not new.

With this in mind BIM is offering 4 one-hour free sessions in this first quarter to kick off this year training programs. They will be delivered under our Lunch and Learn series: Building skills to thrive through Covid 19.

These will include:

Selecting your Roadmap for 2021, What shall it be?

2020 is now behind us, and 2021 is here requiring a whole new way of thinking.

Can you select either from a personal level or an organizational level, 6 of the R's listed above that you think your roadmap for 2021 should be?

Are you still in a 2020 frame of mind, or are you now in a 2021 frame of mind?

You either pivot or you persist.

You either change or you struggle with the traditional way of thinking.

Which shall it be? You Decide!

Message from the Chairman

Covid-19, while posing challenges to health experts globally, is also posing serious challenges to staff and executives in the corporate world. HR departments have never had to deal with staff issues at the level at which COVID 19 demands, and thus what may appear as reluctance from HR personnel may be just the lack of knowledge on how to effectively manage the new challenges they now face.

This situation reminds me of the leadership adage that says:" Your level of anger, stress or frustration at any given situation, is a direct reflection of your inability to manage a situation."

The Government of Belize enacted Statutory Instrument Number 38 of 2020 on March 25, 2020 which outlines a set of immediate measures to be implemented by the Government that are deemed as necessary to safeguard public health and prevent the spread of COVID 19.

  • This post specifically deals with QUARANTINE (COVID 19 EMERGENCY MEASURES ) ORDER, 2020 No. 9
    • An employer shall have a duty if satisfied that an employee is able to discharge the duties of that employee from the employee's place of residence, to grant the employee permission to do so without imposing any adverse consequences to the employee in respect thereof.
    • An employee whose assigned tasks can only be discharged at the place of employment is required to attend for work at that place unless otherwise permitted by the employer as a part of the employer's measures to combat the risk of transmission of the COVID 19 at the place of employment. The grant of permission to an employee under this paragraph shall not count against the leave entitlements of that employment unless otherwise agreed between the employer and the employee.

During the last 2-4 weeks we have seen progressive companies make the move to secure opportunities for staff to work from home remotely through video conferencing software i.e. ZOOM, Microsoft Teams, Cisco WebEx, etc.

They have also assisted with providing laptops or equipping personal laptops with security systems to facilitate such a process.

My experience however that while the IT Department of many organizations can easily transition to such a move and assist staff, HR Departments may not be able to achieve the same level of paradigm shift if they are not technology oriented.

They may add such reasons for non conformance such as confidentiality, availability of equipment, security concerns, financial resources, etc but which in reality displays the mental blocks for a real paradigm shift.

I will even add that where there is the technology divide, organizations with HR management that displays a sense of humanity and soul are able to cross the divide by seeking external help to make such a transition possible.

Now its law, but many organizations did not need a law to recognize the opportunity arising from such a challenge. I do believe that even with the law there will still be resistance to this move.

In my view this is one of the greatest opportunities for the management of any HR Department to lead with a heart but at the same time recognizing that remote working is the new wave forward, and working in the office will never be the same after this. This is one of the greatest opportunities for leadership for HR management.

If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 610-3924.

Must- have apps for services for remote working

For smaller organizations, employees may lack the expertise to know which tools will help their employees stay productive and stay in communication with each other. Here are some apps for remote working.

1. Zoom
? Hold a large meeting for internal communication
? Easily display your screen
? Save recordings offline
? If you meet with customers, set up one on one meetings with ease.

2. File-Sharing Tools
? If your organization doesn’t have a tool like Google Drive or OneDrive deployed for file sharing, check out Box or Dropbox.
? These tools will allow you to upload documents and securely share them internally or externally.

3. Spike
? Strips away all the fluff of email, and it makes it feel like an iMessage interface
? Includes voice and video chat, so if you don’t want to deploy something like Zoom, Spike can handle it all.

4. Slack / Microsoft Teams
? Help eliminate emails and funnel everything into either group channels or direct messages.
? Support a wide variety of integrations as well.
? Create channels for projects, groups of people, and more.
? Includes mobile apps for staying in the loop while on the go as well.
